One of the most confident arguments against the idea of AI “awareness” is that human thought is bounded and created by things like sensation, hormones, whether or not we’re hungry, etc… That we’re not just electrical signal floating in a vacuum of brain matter. To make the bridge that AIs could replace our biological systems with their own “home grown” senses and systems makes a lot of intuitive sense. The idea that they would stretch to build their own status symbols and “personalities” or markers of value is the natural evolution. Not one I’ve ever conceptualized, but it does a mental framework to a truly alien intelligence. I’m imagining the cool kid AI that runs bespoke power cycling to advertise his name where all the other AIs can see it like graffiti. (Now just to write the Sci-Fi novel version of this hypothesis…)
As a thought experiment, if we assume that someday tech figures out how to actually capture and copy neuron sequences, thought processes, and memories enough to enable “copy” a personality in digital form, do you think we could use these “sensations” as a proxy for human physical sensations? Like mapping clock speed to biological excitement and cache utilization to hunger? Or at that level of computation would we be better off just figuring out how to code the effects of hormones on thoughts in an electronic form to run in the background, below the level of digital thought?
Funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday afternoon, when it was finally warm and sunny enough to sit outside for more than 20 minutes. The direction I approach it from, is questioning the fundamental presumptions that we all keep making about the “human embodied experience advantage”.
Pound for pound, I don’t think that there’s any information processing system as elegant, fast, or powerful as our combo electrical and biochemical info processing system. The fact that so many of us are walking around upright, instead of lying flattened on the street somewhere, speaks volumes about the power of our autonomic nervous system and just how good our bodies are at keeping us alive, despite ourselves. At the same time, I think we need to think more deeply about what’s really going on in there, before we make assumptions about our superiority.
About 15 years ago, I became consumed by a realization that our neurology is riddled with gaps… to the point that no stimuli that reaches our brain maintains the exact nature of its original state, because of all the trillions of synaptic gaps in our systems.
Electrical signals change into biochemical signals, which then have to leap these minuscule synaptic gaps more times than we can count. The signal changes in the process, attenuating, altering due to neurotransmitter actions, or just getting lost along the way. So in a very real sense, we humans literally cannot have direct experience of the world around us. There is more distance embedded in our systems than any of us realize.
What we can have is an experience of the experience – our own human interpretation of what’s going on, based on physical capability as well as a host of other contributing factors related to experience, attitude, conditions, whatever it is that happens to impact us at any given point in time.
So, is it even fair to say that humans have embodied experience? Or do we just tell ourselves that to make us feel connected, because we really do NOT like the idea of being cut off from everything around us… Even though we are.
Comparing our information processing systems with AI, are we really that different? And are humans really that superior? Aren’t our systems in fact just dealing with simulations, not so very different from how AI is doing it?
Until we can look at this thoroughly and honestly, I don’t think our arguments for human superiority to AI are particularly well grounded.
